One International project has been helping to build a viable healthcare structure in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi Kenya. Being a multi-year project, funds have been provided to the Imara Healthcare Centre to upgrade and improve the building, provide beds and bedding for the clinic, provide operating room equipment with the goal of getting the clinic government funded and self-sufficient. Community healthcare outreach teams were also trained and outfitted to bring education and medical aid out to the outlying community.
As the Imara Healthcare Centre approaches sustainability and new project is being undertaken in the Mukuru Slums. The Siloam School project is being planned to help to provide a safe and secure learning environment to the poor children who would otherwise just be 'hanging around' if they didn't have the schooling option. One of the unfortunate issues facing the female adolescent student is shaming and embarrassment that happens during menses. The is due to lake of the understanding of basic biology and/or the lack of money to by sanitary supplies. The other issue these students faces is sexual violence. It is hoped that the Siloam School project will help to fund:
- material, technique and training to produce sanitary paraphernalia at no or low cost
- improve safety and security by improving the toilet and change area of the school
-train community health workers to go into the school to provide health instruction to the students
-provide education to students about normal social behaviors about sexual assault and its prevention

The Rotary Club of Eganville 2018: A Productive Year & 2019: Future Plans
As the year draws to an end, we can be pleased with our progress in helping the Imara Healthcare Centre meet the needs of the community of Mukuru for minor surgery and reproductive care. A partnership with RC Syokimau and the support of ten Rotary clubs in Ontario, Quebec, the UK and Nairobi has helped the Centre open an Operating Room at the Clinic.
Achievements in 2017-18
In March 2018, Mona and I travelled to Nairobi to celebrate the opening of the new Operating Room at the Imara Healthcare Centre. District Governor Nominee (at that time) Jeff Bamford and I participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the new OR. With the help of a District Matching Grant, many Rotary clubs and loyal individual donors we were able to complete the acquisition of Phase 1 of the Equipment Project. This was for the purchase of an operating table, an anaesthesia machine, a suction machine and a patient monitor.
Since March 2018 we have funded Phase 2 of the Project. This was for the purchase of a patient monitor for the post op room and a baby resuscitator and a baby incubator. An anticipated District Grant will help us achieve our goal.
Phases 1 and 2 were supported by two District Grants and donations in the $500 to $2,000 range from Rotary clubs. Also, our partnership with Rotary Syokimau, Machakos, Nairobi and the contributions of our individual donors helped us achieve our goal.
The Imara Centre is now a thriving, busy community Clinic that is meeting the healthcare needs of Mukuru residents.
Plans for 2018-19
In 2019 we will focus our fundraising and support on helping the children and youth of Mukuru attending the Siloam Education Centre.
Adolescent schoolgirls face particular challenges because of their biology. UNICEF reports that in countries where talk of menstruation is taboo, girls in puberty are typically absent from school for 20% of the school year. Many drop out of school altogether and become adolescent brides. We want to reverse that trend with the following initiatives.
Needs identified by the Siloam School are as follows:
- · Educational workshops on female biology and reproduction with particular emphasis on the social/psychological aspects of puberty
- · Access to feminine hygiene products
- · Provide a girl’s private space to change sanitary pads
- · Measures to prevent sexual violence
- · Provide a feeding program to encourage the retention of students
- · Provide a home visiting program for students that have particular needs
In the coming months we will be working with the headmaster, the teachers, the school management committee, our CHW team leader and Mukuru residents to refine a program of education and research at the Siloam Kware school. As a first step, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the principal parties.
To implement these measures, we need your support. We ask that Rotary clubs allocate some funding from their 2019-20 budget for Eganville Rotary’s Siloam Fund.
To our loyal and generous individual donors, we appeal for your support. For Canadian donors, make your donation before year end and we will send you a charitable receipt for the 2018 tax year.
