SNBC MODIFIED WORKSHOP REPORT            October 2024

    WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

We held 3 workshops in Siloam education centre  targeting teenager students where each workshop had 35 students of both gender totaling to 105 students overall.

Topics discussed/taught are:
      -Introduction ton SNBC
     -Bullying and harassment
-Gender based violence(emphasis on sexual violence)
     -Fundamental human rights
-Menstrual health and hygiene(emphasis on management and the role of men in menstruation)
    - Drug and substance abuse

These were the main thematic areas of concern. We were informed by the long December holiday which has left Mukuru teenagers in great danger (in previous years) of menstruation poverty, unwanted teenage pregnancies and teenage drugs and substance abuse. This has left many students not reaching their education goals. Our mission is to help this students reach their set goal to success challenges withstanding .

On this we had several things to explore:
-The pyramid of success-by John Woodens
      -Industriousness
      -Friendship
      -Loyalty
      -Cooperation
      -Enthusiasm

Change of attitude/behavior
Its easy to stick on the Mukuru slum norms and forget the bright future ahead. The slum life impacts people negatively in most occasions and a tendency is grown to normalize taboos,myths and misconception and other negative behavior. We brought in the students to share what they hear in the community set up and found that there is a challenge to speak out on matters  MHM to parents because they are always referred to an 'auntie' for that talk and when solution is not found there they end up trading sexually for pads. Sexual violence is happening and they cant speak because they fear victimization and blame. An example had happened few weeks where a student was defiled and killed by the step father to hide evidence and its known to all of us as Mukuru residents.Apologies for such a disturbing example though. Bullying and harassment is happening in school and community and cant speak because no safe space. However,we advocate to Say No and Be Counted; we have offered several ways as solutions to this, Namely;

-All round change of attitude at a personal level(this can be guided by fundamental  human rights were taught      - We have shared our personal contacts to create safe spaces for the students
-Toll free contact 1195 and 116 which protects the child welfare.
-The school administration has always offered to assist in case of any matter arising to get justice
-To make use of the community gatekeepers in case anything happens to them during this holiday(elder,
       Religious leaders etc)
     -Our local administration.

Our work has been made easy by the signage that we erected in the school.  They speak loud to the students and ours is to clarify. On behalf of all the stakeholders I say thank you.

3.SELF ESTEEM

This one plays a great role in attitude and behavior change. We would like all the students to say a meaningful NO and be counted. In analysis we found that there is a gap.Its work on progress and soon we are there.within the caption of the pyramid of success, self esteem is well tackled  in enthusiasm, friendship, cooperation and we can only wish it works well for the student.

We can only thank you for your support. Without your support this could not be possible. We trust that that the 105 students will help themselves with this knowledge and other within the family and community at large. On menstrual management we agreed to come back in January 2025 and make re usable pads for ourselves.

THANK YOU.
